Our vegetable compost is the perfect soil enhancer for your vegetable plot or allotment.

Our rich-organic compost, applied in Autumn or Spring, will ensure that vital nutrients and minerals are available to your prize vegetables throughout the growing season. Unlike synthetic fertilizers our compost will release nourishment slowly and gradually over a season ensuring there is never a lack of goodness in the soil.

When starting a vegetable plot you can quite often inherit a weedy heavy clay or sandy soil that is just generally poor. Our Vegetable compost is the perfect product to break up heavy clay soils and build up sandy soils to make them friable and easier to work with.

The producing of compost is a highly regulated business with regular auditing, chemical and plant growth sampling so you can be rest assured that it is completely safe to grow food in and free of weed seeds. All our compost is certified PAS 100.

If you require any further information on the compost quality please call us on 01273 492 752 or email on james@olus.co.uk.

Benefits and uses

Benefits

  • Acts as a slow-release fertiliser, supplying the main nutrients that a plant needs over an extended period of time as opposed to synthetic fertisliers that are realised very quickly and easily washed away.
  • Helps aid water and nutrient retention due to its porous, spongy nature.
  • Improves soil aeration.
  • Improves drainage.
  • Helps prevent wind and water erosion helping to protect precious topsoil.
  • Supports a wide range of soil bacteria, including those that produce natural antibodies to fight against plant disease.
  • Moderates soil temperature.
  • Helps to form aggregates by the action of soil microorganisms that release sticky secretions to hold soil particles together.

Uses:

Vegetable plot or allotment:

  • To be used on both your vegetable beds to create ideal growing conditions.
  • As a general rule use a minimum of 5cm (2in) across the whole bed. It can be either dug in or if your into "No Dig" leave it on top. Save your back the worms and weather will do the work for you.
  • It can be applied after the growing season in autumn or in spring or both. If applying in spring try to apply 2-3 weeks before growing.
  • When planting out vegetable plants and seed you can add compost to the planting holes and seed trench.

Fruit Trees:

  • Compost should not be used directly in the planting holes as it will encourage the roots to stay inside the small area of the original hole.
  • Instead it should be spread in a ring around tree/ For bigger trees start 60cm (24in) away from the trunk and extend 30cm (12in) beyond the drip line (where the leaf canopy ends).
  • Rake the compost in or dig it into shallow holes at regular intervals around the tree.

 Seedlings:

  • Our compost can be used to make a homemade potting mixture for seeds and modules. Use in small amounts because of its high nutrient content which can cause leggy seedlings that become top heavy.
  • Sieve it finely and mix it 1 part compost, 1 part coir or bark fines to 1 part grit or perlite.
  • Seedlings raised in a greenhouse are particularly susceptible to a fungal disease known as damping off. The compost is broken down by soil organisms that release nutrients and convert them into forms usable by the plants. When a plant has adequate nutrition it grows strong making it more resistant to disease pathogens.
