Planting a Tree with Tree and Shrub Topsoil

1. Dig a hole that is large enough to accommodate the root ball of the tree or shrub you are planting. Ensure the hole is about twice as wide as the root ball.

2. Add a small amount of Tree and Shrub Topsoil to the bottom of the hole and press it down gently, taking care not to compact the soil too much.

3. Loosen the roots from the root ball as much as possible so they spread outward.

4. Position the tree in the hole and check the depth. If needed, add more Tree and Shrub Topsoil to the base of the hole to adjust the height of the tree.

5. While keeping the tree upright, backfill the hole around the root ball with Tree and Shrub Topsoil. Lightly press the soil around the root ball and add more topsoil if there are any low spots.

6. Create a mound of soil around the tree, approximately 1 foot away from the trunk, to create a basin for water retention.

7. Insert a stake near the tree and secure the tree to it to help it grow straight until the roots establish.

8. Water the area inside the mound around the trunk thoroughly, and add additional Tree and Shrub Topsoil to the berm if needed to help retain the water.

9. Apply a layer of Woodland Mulch or Ornamental Bark around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
